What is a Private Cloud?

Private cloud is a computing model that uses resources which are dedicated to given organization. For instance, an engineering college can build a private cloud above its existing IT resources. A private cloud shares many of the characteristics of public cloud computing including resource pooling, self-service, elasticity and pay-by-use delivered in a standardised manner with additional control and customization available from dedicated resources.

Virtualization is a key technological component of private cloud. But real benefit is the increased abstraction of computing resources from infrastructure and machine used to deliver those resources. Only when abstraction is achieved then benefits of cloud- improved agility and responsiveness, reduced TCO can be realized.

In essence a private cloud promises to exceed the cost effectiveness of a virtualized infrastruture through higher workload density and grater resource utilization.
